Having not released an LP since her debut on Bad Boy records in 2006, which was received fairly well, it’s been hard for the music world to let the 26-year old slide through the door these last few years after several bad public performances and an unmaintained music career.
With the intent of turning his protégé into a superstar on today’s music scene, Diddy put Cassie through “Artist Development” and now she, after a few failed singles and holding the record for most album pushbacks for her sophomore album “Electro Love”, is ready to release her free Mixtape entitled “RockaByeBaby”, in hopes to garner some kind of attention. After previewing the mixtape, unfortunately it wont be the attention she may have been looking for.
Here is the problem, the beats are solid, but Cassie is not. On the effort, she seems to lack personality both as a person and as a “singer” to pull off the persona that this mixtape is suppose to have. Its clear that Rihanna has set a standard that bad girls actually do win… but in Cassie’s case, not so much. I’d personally like to hear this mixtape delivered by another artist… Songs like “Take Care of Me Baby”, “Addiction”, “I Love It”, “RockAByeBaby”, “I know What you Want”, “Do My Dance” (Surprisingly DOPE… this will the a strippers anthem, no lie), “Bad Bitches” and “All My Love”- This mixtape has all the potential to be an ultimate winner… But its not, it serves more like a nice demo for someone else.
Hearing Cassie use profane language is sort of laughable. It seems very much contrived and pointless at best. All in all, there is a huge disconnect between it all. I see what was trying to be accomplished here, and had Rihanna cut these songs or maybe even a newer artist with a musical image that hasn’t been tainted, this would be a urban banger, but with Cassie as the presenter it just falls short and lacks all the bells and whistles someone with a better interpretation could have given the project. The title was suppose to be an ode to putting haters to sleep, However… Cassie puts ALL her listeners to sleep… Try Again???
2/5 (ONLY because some of these songs have GREAT potential)
